Hi, I'm Elise. I'm a painter who explores life with anxiety through expressionist portraiture.
My practice uses paint to explore and depict my emotional experience living with Generalised Anxiety Disorder. Using ghostly images, influenced by chiaroscuro methods used in horror films, I employ contrast to leave blanks for the audience which presents tenseness through the lack of information. Using controlled textural brushstrokes, I push my paintings to sit between abstract and figurative as the marks blend the background and foreground. Combined with the considered brushstrokes, I layer my work using gestural marks to act as the inferring, uncontrollable aspects that sit alongside the lurking feelings of anxiety.
