Hi, I'm Charlie Allan! I’m a painter specialising in the exploration of themes related to personal gender identification and societal perceptions of gender identity. My work depicts the challenges of articulating one's gender identity amidst personal discovery and societal expectations.
My art delves into the complexities of grappling with my gender identity amidst societal expectations. Through the lens of abstract expressionism, I navigate the frustrations, anger, and uncertainties inherent in articulating my gender to others, even when my gender identity remains a mystery even to myself. Each piece is meticulously layered, symbolizing the continual process of attempting to convey this deeply personal experience, only to find myself starting again when words fall short. Every stroke is instinctual, emphasizing gestural and dynamic mark-making to convey raw emotion and create bold, expressive compositions. Spontaneous gestures and unpredictable forms serve to encapsulate the myriad of thoughts and feelings surrounding the societal pressures to define and explain my gender.
